Joy Ride is a video installation that uses three parabolic stages to cycle through a woman’s bout of distress. Throughout the video, the character moves through these subsequent stages based on what shoe she is wearing. In a fit of rage, she destroys a pile of telephones with her knife heels in order to achieve an emotional release. Upon destroying these phones, she moves to a stage of cleanliness, attempting to reconcile her actions by fixing that which she has shattered. She does this by scrubbing the pile of broken phones with her cleaning brush shoes. In her third and final stage, she sows her destruction with her own urine and gardening tool shoes, signifying a state of regeneration. Throughout this process, her surroundings swell and transform in harmony with the fluctuations of her emotions. Joy Ride is a narrative that explores archetypes of women as both destroyer and creator, in the context of an Old Hollywood style backdrop.
